An Elephantish Onam at KMVRC

This year Onam comes amidst Covid-19 and the scare it has spread over a period of 6-7 months has been devastating. But even in between all this, the youth spirit of KMVRC has given birth to an elephant named “Elcov” which is a automatic hand sanitizer with a capacity of 1 liter. Vishnu from Para, Ellapully who suffers from 80% locomotive disability and Manjusha from Vandithavalam, Perumatty who is paralysed below the hip have contributed electronically in the making of the elephant. Vishnu S. the Senior Trainer from Innolab trained the students in electronics and help them make the functioning of the elephant accurate.

Before Onam vacation, the team thought of an Onam celebration in a subtle manner in order to keep the morale up and running of the 25+ geriatric people at the Karunya GCC and the hardworking team of KMVRC. The idea of releasing the elephant was strengthened as the complete design of the elephant and its mechanism came into structure almost at the same time. Once the information was passed on to Malayala Manorama which took great interest in the project Elcov made by the differently abled children of KMVRC, Media one also joined forces to show the release on the news channel.

Immediately within 24 hours, the center was cleaned up, responsibilities were alloted, stage was set, onam pookalam design was decided and all internal workings were organised.

With the arrival of Mahabali, the program began…

The event started, media arrived, cultural program by Team KMVRC and a delicious sadhya…

Mahabali returned to Paatal Lok with all pom and glory on a vintage 1960’s bullet….

After Mahabali left, we took some random pics…

We wish all the children at KMVRC could attend the onam celebration but unfortunately, Covid has its own ways of making people do things differently.

Hope to see you all for the next Onam!

And Oh! Malayala Manorama featured a story about us in the newspaper on 29.8.2020…
